Tongits is the most celebrated strategy card game in the Philippines. Combining rummy elements with tactical bluffing, every decision directly impacts your table winnings.
Dealing Structure and Opening Melds
Three players receive 12 cards each, while the dealer receives 13 cards and plays first. Players take turns drawing a card and discarding one.
You must form valid melds before calling a challenge:
- Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank (e.g., 7-7-7).
- Straight Flush: Three or more linked cards of the same suit (e.g., 4-5-6 of Spades).
Sapaw Maneuvers and Calling a Draw
Sapaw allows you to attach matching cards onto other players' exposed melds. This reduces your hand count without discarding.
When you believe your remaining cards have the lowest numerical total, you can call Draw. Rival players can challenge or fold.
Avoiding the Burn Penalty (Sunog)
Lay down at least one meld before someone calls Tongits. Otherwise, you are declared Burn (Sunog).
Burned players forfeit all pot claims and pay extra penalties to the round winner.
Bankroll Discipline at Tongits Tables
Choose pot stakes matching your skill level. Start at beginner tables with ₱5 to ₱20 pots to master timing before challenging high-pot rooms.
